Tool Steel Ring
The AS 5282 Test Ring (formerly known as the Ketos Test Ring) is a quick test method for ensuring an MPI process is suitable for detecting a type of defect.
The AS 5282 Ring consists of a ring with a series of drilled holes in different positions. The holes closest to the outer circumference simulate shallow defects while the holes closest to the centre of the ring simulate deep sub-surface discontinuities which would typically only be found using a DC current.
Conforms to:
- ASTM E709-08 (Sections 14.2.2, 20.6.7 & 20.8.4)
- ASTM E1444/E1444M-12 (Section 7.1.2, Annex A4)
- ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (Section V, Article 7: T-766.1)
- SAE AS5282
Using the AS 5282 Test Ring
A test is performed by mounting the AS 5282 Test Ring on a central conductor in a threader bar configuration with the ring at 90 degrees to a coil centreline. By applying a current flow shot through the threader bar the defects in the AS 5282 Test Ring can be seen around the circumference of the ring in a series of lines.
Below are the minimum number of holes that should be observed for compliance to the standards listed:
Type of suspension | Amperage (FWDC or HWDC) | Minimum number of holes indicated |
Fluorescent (wet) |
500 1000 1500 2500 3500 |
3 5 6 7 9 |
Visible (wet) |
500 1000 1500 2500 3500 |

Dry Powder | 500 1000 1500 2500 3500 |
4 6 7 8 9 |
